Design debate, 27th february 2006
As a result of the (former) editor of the Norwegian design magazine SNITT, Judith Nærland, reading my MA thesis Kritikk av visuell kommunikasjon (”Visual Communication Criticism”), I was invited to take part in a panel about visual communication arranged by Grafill on the 27th february 2006.
The theme of the debate was something like “is graphic design only commercial or could it be something else?”. However the seemingly interesting theme, it became very disparate, with several different discussion threads going in parallel. I found it difficult to contribute anything of real value to the debate, and discovered how hard it is to formulate anything sensible when you have to reason live.
Still, even though I felt it didn’t go swell, Judith Nærland asked me to write an article for the following issue, in which I feel I managed to be a little more articulate.
Halvor Bodin also expressed his opinion about the panel (and my article) in his regular “Diatribe” column in SNITT, the issue after my article was printed.
